Johnny Depp tells EW that he didn't get Pirates 2 or 3 either, so much so that he didn't even see the sequels. He's only watched the first Pirates flick. Here's what he had to say:
"They had to invent a trilogy out of nowhere...It was plot driven and complicated. I remember talking to [Gore Verbinski, director of the first three films] at certain points during production of 2 or 3, and saying: ‘I don’t really know what this means.’ He said, ‘Neither do I, but let’s just shoot it.’ This guy is this guy’s dad, and this guy was in love with this broad. It was like, ‘What?'"
Well, I for one think this is refreshing. As a life-long Depp fan, I've often wondered how he even agreed to those movies. I thought maybe he was losing it. Maybe he didn't realize how bad they were. Maybe he was so happy with Vanessa Paradis in their French chateau with their French children that he didn't notice how bad they were. Nope. He knew, but he was already signed on and he made the most of it. And really, Disney should be thanking the Magic Kingdom gods that he did, because I'm not sure we would have flocked to see those things if he hadn't graced them with his presence. Here's hoping he exercised a little more caution when signing on for On Stranger Tides.
